Colors of Silence

I’ve been far from silent the past 36 hours, moving from activity to activity, conversation flowing into conversation.  Our days can often quickly be submerged in words – full and empty – noise – that’s both harmonizing and a cacophony.  It’s silence that can reorient, recenter and renew us.  That seems logical, but in our noisy world of liquid modernity and constant chatter, it’s quickly drowned out by the audible competition.

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.

Mother Teresa

The words of Mother Teresa remind us of what we need, what we most long for, that which is often lost in the competing voices clamoring for our quotidian attention.  Sit in silence for 1-5 minutes today.  Don’t look for what you can find int he silence, rather focus upon letting the silence find you, penetrate you and renew you.
