Savor

Today’s practice is one that you’ll do throughout the day, but will intentionally complete at the end of the day.

As you end the day, settle down and prepare for the night – wether to sleep, or be quiet and still, repass the events and times and relational connections of today through your mind.  This is a form of the Ignatian prayer practice of the Daily Examen.  Where and when did you have great joy?  How did you savor it?  How did it give you more energy, or life?

Jesus gives a teaching about attachment and savoring:

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:21

I’m doubtful that he’s teaching total detachment.  Rather I think he’s inviting us to be mindful of what, where and whom we treasure.  He’s inviting us to savor the good gifts, moments and connections in our lives; to recognize the blessing that they are and that come from them, without turning they themselves into idols to be worshipped, or commodities to master and horde.

Where were your treasures today?  How did you savor them?  How did you struggle to possess them?  How did you fail to recognize and celebrate them?
